With Wake Uppers queuing up for the Five year program in Plum village, one may wonder whether there is no middle way between practicing at home (maybe with the Five M.T.'s), or ordaining in a monastery.
Is there a way to practice engaged buddhism in the midst of society? Thay thinks there is. Although new monastics are always welcome and I personally love to see my sangha brothers and sisters now suddenly dressed in brown, I am very happy that Thay founded Tiep Hien, the Order of Interbeing (http://www.orderofinterbeing.org/), supported by the Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings. The O.I. was founded to function as a bridge between the Lay Sangha and the Monastic Sangha. But since there aren't many Wake Up O.I.-members, this has not really happened for us. Do we want it to? Let's see!
Here is a retreat where we have the chance to deepen our practice, cultivate joy and exchange with each other our hopes and dreams for the future. And then we share these dreams with international O.I.-members and ask them all our questions. They will share with us about the Fourteen Mindfulness Trainings and how practicing with these influenced their daily lives. As a nun once said to me when I was Staff on a retreat: "Let's play together!"
Attending the retreat for only a few days is possible, if you cannot attend the entire week.
