Psychotherapy and Buddhism
with Jan Boswijk
Both Buddhism and psychotherapy seek to transform suffering and increase happiness. However, they do so from different perspectives and use different methods. So just what do they have in common? Where do they differ and where do they overlap? Can we say, for example, that Buddhist practice involves suppressing emotions such as anger, whilst experimental psychotherapy helps to deal with these feelings? Can Buddhist practice and psychotherapy work together and be mutually supportive, or do we have to choose between them?
